FAQs
Are services at Coastal GAC free?
Most services at Coastal are free if you have a Nova Scotia Health Card. This includes doctor visits and nursing visits. During these visits, we may prescribe hormones or refer you for surgery as needed. Some services have a cost. For example, filling out forms, and providing gender affirming facial aesthetic procedures such as Botox and filler may have a fee.
How do I get started?
Email or call our clinic to request an intake form. Once we get your completed form, we will contact you to book your first appointment.
Can I book my first appointment online?
No. Your first appointment must be booked by emailing or calling the clinic. After your first appointment, you can book follow-ups online.
Do I need an appointment for prescription refills?
Yes. We require appointments for prescription refills to make sure your medications are safe and still the right choice for you. It’s best to keep track of when you are about to run out and book your refill appointment in advance. If you do run out, contact us as soon as possible.
Does Coastal GAC do virtual consults?
Yes. We offer virtual appointments for many types of care. Contact us to see if your appointment can be virtual.
Who are the health care providers at Coastal?
Our team includes:
• General Practitioners (GPs)
• Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)
• Director of Operations
• Administrative staff
All team members provide safe, respectful, and affirming care.
How long do I have to wait before my first appointment?
Wait times can vary. Most new patients are seen within a few weeks. We will let you know once your intake form is received.
Do you offer other services or only gender affirming care?
We focus on gender affirming care for trans and non-binary people. However, our paid medical aesthetic services are open to anyone who respects our inclusive, queer space. Profits from these services help keep the clinic running.
Medical Aesthetics
Coastal offers medical aesthetics services on Saturdays, including Botox and filler. Most proceeds go back into the clinic to pay for staff, rent, and supplies. If you have a health plan, check to see if it may cover these services.
Why doesn’t Coastal offer all family medicine services?
Coastal focuses on providing high-quality gender affirming care to people in Nova Scotia. This allows us to serve as many patients as possible with specialized care. Because of the high number of patients, we cannot act as a full family doctor for everyone. Doing so would limit our ability to provide gender affirming care to all who need it.
Anti-Harassment and Discrimination Policy
Coastal does not tolerate harassment or discrimination, including toward staff or other patients. This also includes harassment in the form of repeated or threatening emails or phone calls. We may ask anyone who repeatedly disrespects our staff or patients to no longer use our services. We are committed to keeping a safe and respectful space for everyone.
No-Show Policy
We have very high demand for our services. Missed appointments carry a $50 fee. Missing appointments prevents someone else from getting care, so this policy helps us serve more patients.
Are your doors open?
To keep everyone safe and secure, the doors may be locked when you arrive. If the door is locked, please ring the doorbell or call the clinic. We try to make sure the door is unlocked when you are coming in for an in-person appointment, but because many patients schedule online or at different times, the door may not always be open.
